Playing Card: Art Nouveau
The Art Noveau movement really reminds me of Alphonse Mucha whose work is instantly recognizable. This is where I drew my inspiration for the piece that I have designed. In turn because of his characteristic style done for poster designs he has also inspired modern artists like Adam Hughes. I also drew upon on his interpretation of the art noveau movement as well. I have used thick outlines while showing thin lines within much like the work of Mucha showed. Furthermore, I took into account the muted tones and fine detail that was produced by this artist. Since my design represents the King of Hearts I had to deviate away from the usual subject matter used in the work Mucha produced. Hence the female form sensuously entwined with nature is absent from what I present. In that part I was inspired more by the gritty males present in the Art Noveau work of comic book artist Adam Hughes. Not only that but I also was inspired by Alphonse Mucha himself who I think resembles a man that could be in one his designs. The characteristic shapes, twists and motifs from Mucha’s work are also present in the design both in the front and back of the card. I created the design by using a drawing laid out and rehearsed on paper. Afterwards that illustration was brought into Illustrator to achieve the desired look for the design. The program was also used to work on the placement of elements such as the font and shapes. Furthermore, I have used the program to add a distinct texture to make the playing card look like something from the past.
